You may not always realize it, but color affects many aspects of our daily lives. From our moods to how we interact with others, color impacts how we feel and behave. When it comes to color in lighting, the effects are much the same. We can measure color temperatures using the Kelvin scale, which is a thermodynamic temperature measurement.
Here is a breakdown of the Kelvin light color temperature range:
Finding the right light temperature depends on the space and what it will be used for. Generally speaking, when you match the color of the light to the color of the surroundings, it will create a look of harmony, and the space will feel very comfortable. And using the same temperature lights throughout a room will give the space a clean feel.
Lower Kelvin temperatures that create an inviting feel with warm colors are typically best suited for living and public spaces where comfort is the goal. And if the space has golds, reds, yellows and other warm colors, or brown woods, a Kelvin temperature between 2000 and 3000 is ideal.
For more vibrant lighting that works well for office spaces and kitchens because of its closeness to morning light, the mid-range of the Kelvin scale is a good choice. This range also works well for spaces with colors like greens and blues.
The high range of the Kelvin scale is comparable to the sunlight at noon, so it’s best suited to places and things that require invigorating lighting, such as security lighting and displays, or in shops and warehouses where visibility is very important.
