What Are Lumens?

What Are Lumens?

, by Chas Waters, 3 min reading time

While technological advancements have enabled significant improvements in lighting solutions, spawning a wide range of different options available, no alternative lighting product can totally replace the dependable use of a traditional flashlight. Flashlights are the best lighting option when you need a portable beam of light, better and more controlled lighting or a reliable signaling device.

With the introduction of LED — light emitting diode — technology and improved battery lifespan, standard flashlights are now more efficient, smaller, more lightweight and brighter than ever. When you’re shopping for your next flashlight, you may be surprised by how many options are available — but one important characteristic to note is the flashlight’s lumen output.

So what are lumens? Until recently, the word “lumens” wasn’t a popular term for measuring light output in the United States — most people were more familiar with measuring light according to wattage. Wattage describes how much power an incandescent light bulb has to illuminate, with higher watts producing more light because the device uses more power. LED lights use only a fraction of the energy, so lumens is a more useful term for distinguishing different types of light power.

A lumen measures the light output of a device when it’s on its highest brightness setting and powered by new batteries. Think of this in a traditional sense, where lumens refer to the amount of light output compared to candle strength — one lumen offers enough light to illuminate the same amount of space as one candle.

The Range of Lumen Intensity Available for Flashlights

Lumens may seem like an unimportant figure when you’re shopping for a new flashlight, but this measurement can be instrumental — especially since flashlights often range from 20 to 3,500 lumens. The number you require often depends on the type of project you’re working on. There are three different types of flashlights to choose from, all with a range of lumens available:

  • Tactical: Tactical flashlights offer diverse usage, from easily navigating dark pathways to deterring potential assailants. Many tactical flashlights have a low lumen setting so that you can complete any number of tasks. These lights range from five to more than 130 lumens, with the lower setting proving ideal for navigation and reading.
  • Camping: When you’re out in the wilderness, you’ll need a reliable flashlight with a long battery life for maneuvering through inclement weather or nighttime — camping flashlights are typically available from five to 100 lumens.
  • Emergency: When you’re in an emergency, you need a durable and effective flashlight for getting through hazardous conditions and signaling for help. Find emergency flashlights that have both a low and high lumen setting as well as a strobe setting.
